When I first dreamt up Complimentees I knew one of the things that I really wanted to do was get out into the community and just, well, spread a little love. Have days with random acts of kindness in hopes of bringing smiles and encouraging others to, in turn....spread a little love themselves.
Less than a month into our soft launch I was cutting flowers in my garden and making some arrangements when I got a "big idea" that I put into my folder of "future big ideas"...but that big idea gave birth to a "tiny idea" that I could make happen quickly, and thus, our first passion project.
This time of year my garden is brimming with beautiful flowers and they desperately need to be shared and loved by many, so I wanted to bundle them up into small bouquets and send them out into the world to let people know that they did indeed "bloom beautifully".
Of course....then, we had to have a t-shirt design!!
And.....those needed to be handed out, too!
I gathered a few friends that I knew would enjoy bringing smiles to others and we hit the streets of Nashville. ON THE HOTTEST DAY OF THE YEAR.
Seriously, it was like 110 degrees on the pavement, a heat advisory had been issued and the Mayor had asked everyone to stay indoors. Sounds like tutu and cowboy boot weather to me!!
We didn't know what to expect, thinking maybe no one would be out and about and that possibly the heat would make everyone cranky and less than open to a little love from strangers....
We were wrong.
Plenty of people were out. People working, tourists visiting, and bridal parties partying....plenty of people for lots of smiles. Heat advisory be damned!! What I found to be most interesting is that almost every single person said the same thing as we approached them with flowers and said "Have a Great Day!".......everyone responded with "Are you sure?".
I have never been more sure in my life!!! Of course I want you to have a great day and take these flowers!!!
Makes me just a smidgeon saddened that people tend to question the kindness of others....but we are going to change that one compliment and a t-shirt at a time!!!
After the initial lack of sureness in the gesture, we always got smiles. But, not JUST smiles. We got cheers, laughter, and an occasional tear. Several people told us it was the best thing that had happened to them all day and even one little girl came back around to let us know she'd decided that instead of a birthday party....she wanted to do what we were doing! That one moment right there was worth it all. If everyone else had smacked the flowers out of our hands it would have been okay because that one child was moved to spread the love!!
It didn't take us long before we were out of flowers and t-shirts and I told my husband when he asked, "if you could have changed anything about the day, what would that have been?" Easy. I would have had more to give.
YOU BLOOMED BEAUTIFULLY
You bloomed beautifully. Not because someone took the time to water you everyday. But because when you got thirsty, you walked until you found a stream. You bloomed beautifully. And it had nothing to do with being planted in the perfect sunlight. But because sometimes things got dark and you rode it out until the light peeked between the cracks.
With great love,
I Believe What I Wear
