Making It Happen

October 14, 2018 10 Comments

This summer we started a construction project and honestly.....I never in a million years thought that we wouldn't be completely finished and basking in the glory of it all come October, but here we are...partially finished...in the rainy season.

It's cool, though.  Really.  Fortunately I love working in the rain.  I love just being outside in the rain, period. It works all of my senses into a frenzy.  I'm not sure there is anything that makes me feel more alive than being in the rain.  Except getting dirty....IN THE RAIN.  And I'm getting to do both right now, while creating something I have dreamed about for a long time.

My husband and I have been together for nearly 30 years.

We have raised two boys.  (Hard to tell just yet how successfully we raised them, they are still young and always on the edge of a mistake.  But they have now been out of the house for several years without coming back to stay for more than a visit, so I'm going to call that a win until they prove it otherwise.)

We've raised more rescue puppies than I can count.  (Potentially with greater success than the humans)

We've raised endless gardens. (Definitely with greater success than the humans)

We've raised our voices in love and anger.

We've raised a plethora of questions.

We've raised a little cain when we needed to sew our oats.

We've raised our hands when no one was listening.

We've raised a glass or two in celebration and adoration.

We've raised flags with our hands on our hearts.

We've raised sails to see them (our boys) off to do what they love.

We've raised eyebrows to declare bullshit in the midst of a standoff.

We've raised our blood pressure....weekly.  Sometimes by the hour.

We've raised attention to the causes that we hold dear.

We've raised up each other in grand and weak moments.

And now....we've raised a barn.

And the experience has not been so different than all of the above!!  Ups and downs and frustrations and arguments and moments of divine creativity and moments of I DON'T GIVE A #@$% ANY LONGER, DO WHATEVER YOU WANT.   Moments of pride and moments of weakness.  Exactly how it always is when you are doing anything you feel with deep passion.  Anything you have waited a lifetime to come to fruition.

I know...you just asked yourself "who feels this kind of deep passion about a barn?"

That's me....raising my hand.  You see those windows?  I've had them for like 15 years!!

This barn has a dual purpose.

A.  We need storage. Now, there isn't a woman out there that is telling the truth if she says she has never been passionate about more storage!!  Do I fantasize about the hundreds of other things I could do with this currently blank space.  Oh yeah.  But storage keeps winning in rock, paper, scissors.

B.  Farm animals.  I've wanted to be able to expand the rescue to help the occasional farm animal.  And selfishly, I've just needed farm animals in my life for a very long time.  We will help what we can along the way.  Built it tall enough for a giraffe....you know....just in case.   Actually my exact goals for the second half of this life are to grow old, surrounded by all kinds of animals, raising vegetables and fruits that no one else has ever heard of and sharing them at the farmers market where I'll also write  poems, for free, for anyone who has never had a poem written for them...or for someone they love.  Because everyone needs to try something new and everyone deserves to have a poem written for them before they die.

Currently I have the pleasure of loving on Rhetta Jewel (tripod goat) and her friend Effie LaRue (totally four legged goat!!).  Spooky Boo Baggins (a wee munchkin of a pig) came to us after his childhood film star days ended and he couldn't get any more work.  His agent told him that the only roles a five month old pig was going to pick up in this town wouldn't pay enough to keep him in zucchini.  He's beginning to pick his head up as we work on self confidence and he's expressed interest in studying ballet.  And just this weekend we added a rooster, Crawdad, to the crew, after he found himself locked behind bars at the local shelter for cockadoodledoodling at large. Rumor has it he was drinking and roaming the neighborhood with about 20 young hens. The hens fled when the po po arrived since it was past their curfew.  He was only charged with a misdemeanor, but still, y'all...our boy has a record and we are hoping to turn his life around.

And this is just the beginning.

I cannot wait to meet all the new animals that are going to cross our path so I can make up fantastic stories about their past as we prepare them for their future.

I know not everyone dreams of a barn and helping orphaned farm animals and writing poetry under a tent in the swells of the summer heat....but the point is, don't stop dreaming and don't give up on living the life YOU want. YOU GOT THIS! Seize the day and make it happen. This is it. We get BUT ONE.  And whether you dream of backpacking across the globe, running a marathon naked in the city that never sleeps, or cutting a hip hop album....YOU HAVE THE ABILITY TO MAKE IT HAPPEN BECAUSE YOU ARE THAT FREAKING AWESOME!!! So start preparing by just keeping those dreams alive inside you.

~Shawn

PS....to all the moms out there....the moms still doing the full-time mom thing.  Right now your dreams revolve around your kids and that's okay.  That's what mom's do.  However, the shocking thing is that their dreams likely do not revolve around you. At all.  Like, in their dreams, you might not even visit.  It's a brutal thought, but you know what they say, the truth hurts.  They are going to grow up and if you've done your job...move on. It's a beautiful thing really and even though right now, it makes you teary eyed...oh, one day.  One day you will dance when you escort them out the door!  But it might be awhile before you get there, so don't forget who you are as an individual in the interim.  Your time will come, I promise...so every now and then, do a little daydreaming for yourself.  Make plans...anticipate the great things waiting for you.

Inspiring, magical, labor of love. Filled with all types of passion. You bring to so many of us sadness for the abused, hope for new lives for them, and joy when they find their forever families. My life is made better because of your life and I thank you endlessly for making me feel all these emotions. For without emotion, we are nothing. Bless you and all you do to make this world a better place, one animal at a time.

I loved this and the ps hit home. My daughter is married and starting a family of her own. As she was an only child I’ve cried quite a few tears over her being gone. Even though they live here locally I sometimes feel like I don’t exist anymore. Your words wère exactly what I need to remember when I feel alone. You are an amazing person with an amazing gift, thank you for sharing it with us. Even though I am disabled I still need to dream and one day maybe I can make my dreams come true also.

Oh my!!! I didn’t think there was anyone else in the world who could create these alternate universes when describing animals. When I see an animal, an entertaining vignette surrounds them…and why wouldn’t it?? Yes, I believe in movie star pigs that Hollywood left behind and roosters chased by the po-po. I’m just glad someone else sees it too :-). Thanks Shawn!

Shawn – I love this so much! My dream would be to have an animal sanctuary and rock at-risk babies at the hospital. If I ever win the lottery, that is. I guess I need to start buying those tickets. Ain’t gonna happen on this divorcee’s income. Thank you for what you do. I am happy to come pick stalls and pooper scoop the yard and love on the animals in general <3.
